Early Career Exchange with Floyd Mueller
Floyd Mueller from the University of Melbourne, Australia, will be visiting the London Knowledge Lab from August 10th 2009 to collaborate with the Designing Tangibles For Learning project. The focus of his visit will be to extend the understanding and use of ubiquitous technologies for promoting physical interaction through the use of exertion interfaces.
Exertion interfaces require intense physical effort such as swinging objects around the body, jumping up and down, running on the spot or cycling on a stationary bike. As such, users of exertion interfaces benefit from fitness outcomes while engaged in play. Most exertion interfaces have a low entry fee and can provide a familiar affordance, meaning that users can easily acquire the skills and simple routines required to interact with the interface.
Research is beginning to explore collaborative, remote interaction with exertion interfaces, however, few studies exist which explore how exertion interfaces contribute to our understanding of the intersection of tangible, physical and shareable interfaces, particularly for learning. Initial studies at the London Knowledge Lab are beginning to explore the potential role of exertion interfaces as devices for supporting children’s understanding of basic science concepts. Our interest is in how exertion interfaces can engage participants in collaborative and playful learning through physical activity.
An open seminar with Floyd will be announced in late August/early September.

Date: June 23rd, 2009
Location: Science Museum's Dana Centre
Time: 11:00-16:00 (day); 19:00-21:00 (evening)
Organisers: DeTaLe Project at the London Knowledge Lab
LKL Contact: Jennifer G. Sheridan
Cost: Free, open to the public
Surface Tension: Interactives and workshops from Dreamtime Film on Vimeo.
From multi-touch displays to tangible tabletops, interactive surfaces are thrusting media into the physical world. Come play, see and hear from the researchers and performers who are re-defining what it means to be a surface.
The full day event follows on from the success of the DeTaLe projectat the London Knowledge Lab, which is researching how to design tangibles for learning. The day will consist of hands-on demonstrations, installations and short talks, followed by an evening of performances and a panel of experts who will discuss the history of interactive surfaces and debate future implications.
The event will feature a performance from the multi-award winning reacTable from Barcelona, Spain - as seen alongside pop performers such as Björk. See www.reactable.com
A full listing of exhibitors and a schedule will be online shortly.
This event is held in conjunction with the London Knowledge Lab and is supported by the EPSRC-funded UbiComp Grand Challenge.
